When
Berny and Belle returned to Toronto they decided they
wanted to do something for these courageous young heroes.
In
1984, Aid to Disabled Veterans of Israel (Canada) became
a registered fundraising charity. Canadians have contributed
millions to provide medical and rehabilitation equipment
for the Beit Halochem centers.
Every
year the Toronto Jewish community has hosted a two week
visit for groups of Israeli
disabled war veterans. The Montreal chapter has been
hosting since 1986.
Highlights
of the visits include participation in cultural and
entertainment activities, with visits to museums, concerts,
theatres, nightclubs, and local restaurants. There are
also highly emotional visits to the Jewish Day schools
and to Jewish facilities and institutions within the
communities.
The veterans get to learn about their host area through
sightseeing and meetings with important public figures.
